What we can learn from the Bayou Barbie

I love seeing young people win. All young people. (That’s the difference between me and these racist fascists, but more on that later.) They have this fearlessness about them, as they journey into the unknown where their potential lives. I don’t watch sports, but even I was enthralled to see the shit-talking these college-level athletes do. A lot of the onlookers compared the uproar to what has been seen in the NBA, stating males have done much more during their games. But I don’t think it’s an issue regarding sex or even age. Angel quite proudly represents a group of young people who just don’t give a fuck. They are not operating under the expired “Work twice are hard to even be seen half as much” trope. They do what they want and ask permission never. Ask yourself why grown ass adults with bills and back pain are so upset that a young, focused college athlete is proud of all of the hard work, sweat and tears that her and her team have put in and are now excitedly reaping the rewards of. The color of her skin. I know it truly seems unbelievable, but again, so is racism. The blatant disregard of opponent Caitlyn’s identical actions/movements is a whole other ball game, no pun intended. I just don’t think we even need to include that because whether Caitie Mae did it first or not, there’s nothing wrong with a ball player being excited about her team’s first National Championship. Sometimes, I believe we tie ourselves up by waiting for approval based on what was okayed for another subgroup. I’m all about doing what you want to do, as long as you’re not hurting anyone, no matter what ANYONE else is doing.

So what can we learn from Ms. Reese? We need more of this. More families telling their little ones that they are invincible. That they can reach any and every goal they dream of. Telling them that they can talk their shit, as long as they back it up. We need more of the older generation appreciating the attitude of those that have seen where we’ve been and maybe decided to take a different path. They may not believe in separate but equal; they want it all. And the talent speaks for itself, love…they’re headed in the right direction.
